Because of decades of war, there is only 27 % literacy in South Sudan. The figure for women is 8%, which is shocking. The government allocation for schools is minimal. There are church schools, but often teachers are unqualified. Three quarters of girls do not have primary education. Few girls complete any education because they are needed at home to do child minding, chores like fetching water very early in morning, and work in fields. Most parents cannot afford uniform or text books.  Many get pregnant in their early teens. One in ten die in childbirth.

The Revd Peter Marshall writes, “Susan, whom I first met as a toddler, was knocked down by a motor bike going to primary school with serious injuries. We were able to pay for her to go first to Juba, 275 miles away, and then Kampala, Uganda”.

With sponsorship she can attend the local Catholic Primary (up to 14) school in remote Yambio, where her father is a vicar BUT as a boarder, so she is not taken up with hours of chores before and after school. Full boarding fees are £170 per term,  plus extras like text books, toilet paper, a broom etc!

Small monthly donations can make a huge difference to Susan’s life.

Susan, 13 this week (February 2023) has been able to start at Yambio Catholic School as boarder.

Such a big event in a country where there is only 8% literacy for women and few complete educatio

Your help with Susan would be much appreciated.
