Devastation for our friends and the village community where we belong

Following the tragedy we were able to send some funds for funerals. In the immediate aftermath we then began to have conversations about what we could do as a charity and in partnership with St David’s College, Llandudno - pupils from this school have built close relationships in the village over the last 8 years or so - to help support the children who were orphaned and the business sector recover.

These photographs were taken during and just after the devastation by the fire.

Kyambura is the village where St David’s pupils along with past pupil John Njendahayo located a semi-commercial campsite a number of years ago to encourage tourism and be a base for community project work. It is also the village where the coffee project was launched.

The Project

Following informal discussions in Uganda a plan has emerged that could address both the commercial regeneration of the village and educational support for the children orphaned in the fire.

We will look for a small piece of land close to the main road but in a safe location where a covered market place can be built - it would be on a concrete base with fire resistant roofing and brick built market stalls with lock aways underneath. These market stalls will be rented to the villagers to rebuild their businesses and the surplus funds from the rent of the stalls will be used to pay children’s school fees.

Our target is £7000 for the first phase.

If we can raise this over this Christmas then the market place can be ready within a few months.
