Ideas for setting up your Community Hub

Your local Community hub

Our HUB in Llandudno is at Holy Trinity Church and we are working with Cytun (Churches Together in Llandudno). Using a church is helpful as all churches have robust Safeguarding policies and procedures and are covered by 3rd Party Liability Insurance. This makes it safe for you and for refugees who come to see you.

Please let us know about your Community HUB and we will add it to our page to help Hosts and Refugees find their nearest HUB.

Your local facebook group

Here is an idea for a Group that will have consistent branding across North Wales and will keep you as safe as possible.

  • Use the flag as a profile picture and put your local name on it.

  • Name the FB Page with your local community name.

  • Create a FB address @ (your area code plus HUB).

  • Allow Messenger - this will be the prime way people can send you a message without you having to share personal phone number or email address.

  • Create several Admin people for the page so that more of you receive the message to share the load.

Ukrainian Christians will find you and there are some excellent resources for your Community Hub

Safeguarding & DBS Checks

This is to keep you safe and the Ukrainian Refugees safe.

SAFEGUARDING TRAINING

The Welsh Government recommends everyone involved, in any regard, with volunteering to support Ukrainian Refugees should complete the Social Care Wales Group A Safeguarding e-learning course. This has just been made public and is accessible for all.

DBS

We understand that host families do not need a Basic Volunteer DBS check in order to register, however it is a simple and quick process to get one and we would recommend that it is good practise and could ease registration with your local authorities - see Sponsor Guidance.

If you do intend working with children unaccompanied by their parents, you would need an Enhanced DBS. We will share our experience of this with a family who have found a match with a refugee and are preparing to register with the Government. Click below to find our more…

How can your HUB prepare for refugees arriving?

Children will want to get into a school as priority, they will be frustrated their learning has been disrupted.

Adults will want the security of a job.

The Local Authority will already know about the link between the host home and the Ukrainians arriving. The LA will have all the basic requirements taken care of.

The main role of the Hub will be to provide support for the hosts and Ukrainians staying with them, such as:

  • transport

  • arranging social and recreational events and outings

  • connecting with local clubs and activities

There could also be a need for clothes and equipment so knowing about local collections/foodbank etc will be useful

  • Conwy Foodbank has offered to support Ukrainian refugees - you may have a more local Foodbank that can help.

  • Mobilise your schools to do a project - collecting school uniform, baby clothes, welcome bags, food hampers, toys etc.

It’s simply about what you would do when you move into a new area if you came with nothing.
